Ground Vehicles / Units
M1A1/T-90
These heavy armor have been tweaked quite a bit from BF2. They now have much more torque, climbing power, and top speed. Their shells have about the same arc and speed as their DC counterparts, while the turrets are capable of aiming higher than in BF2.
TIP: Don’t be afraid to try and shoot down low flying aircraft. Unlike BF2, one tank shell will down anything that flies.
Linebacker/Tunguska
Like BF2, these vehicles provide mobile AA support. Unlike their BF2 counterparts, these vehicles do not utilize lock on missles and instead use dumbfire missles. Each missle is fitted with a proximity fuse that will detonate if the missle’s trajectory passes close enough to the enemy aircraft. The closer a missle is when the proximity detonation triggers, the more damage the enemy aircraft will take. Achieving a direct hit without the aid of the proximity fuse will do considerably more damage.
The Tunguska’s cannon fires more rapidly but the Linebacker’s does more damage per shot.
TIP: Neither the Linebacker nor the Tunguska carry many rockets at a time. However, finding an ammo crate to hide around can greatly increase your lethality. If you get caught by an enemy aircraft without any rockets you will be at a severe disadvantage.
Bradley/BMP
These lighter armors emphasize troop movement and can carry up to 4 passengers along with the driver.
The BMP is amphibious, and its tow rockets do more damage than the Bradley’s. However, the BMP has a much longer reload time between tow rockets. The Bradley is not an amphibious vehicle, but can fire two tow rockets in rapid succession before it must reload.
Unlike BF2, tow rockets in Desert Conflict are dumbfire and fly straight towards their target.
Players sitting in the inside passenger seats of both of these vehicles are healed as if standing by a medic cabinet.
TIP: Due to the BMP’s slower tow reload time, players utilizing this vehicle need to make sure every shot counts.
BRDM
This light APC is fairly quick and can hold a single driver, gunner, and passenger. Like in the original DC, this vehicle is capable of amphibious assaults.
The BRDM comes in two variants, with one equipped with 14.5 mm machine gun and the other with 5 Spandrel anti-tank rockets. The passenger seat of both of these variants are capable of using the artillery spotting feature.
TIP: To put a lot of firepower on a target, a gunner using the 14.5 mm gun can fire both guns at the same time by pushing the left and right mouse buttons simultaneously.
Technicals
These basic vehicles are used for troop movement. However, some are armed.
TIP: Unarmed technicals such as the white toyota do not show up on Bomber HUDs. This allows them to slip around the battlefield with an element of stealth and makes them excellent choices for snipers or special ops players.
DPV/FAV
These small vehicles are perfect for sneaking around the battlefield. For what they lack in armor they make up for in speed. These vehicles are considerably faster and also drift a bit more in Desert Conflict.
TIP: To make up for their lack of weapons and armor, these vehicles do not show up on Bomber HUDs. This allows them to slip around the battlefield with an element of stealth and makes them excellent choices for snipers or special ops players.
SA-3
This stationary anti-air unit sports 3 dumbfire proximity detonation missles along with a single TV guided missle. The SA-3 has infinite missles, but must still reload.
Left clicking fires the dumbfire missles, while right clicking puts the player into the TV guided missile mode. Once in the TV mode the player simply left clicks to fire. To steer the missle the player can continuously left click to move the targeting crosshairs which causes the missile to adjust to the new set course. This TV guided missile is also equipped with proximity detonation, so the player merely needs to fly the missile into an aircraft or close to it.
TIP: Since the SA-3 has infinite ammo, don’t be afraid to fire off any extra missles you may have after an assault to keep all 3 ready and trained at the sky.
Hummer/Vodnik
Compared to BF2, these vehicles now have much more torque, climbing power, and top speed. Hummers come equipped with either the standard mounted .50 cal or a tow rocket launcher.
TIP: To make up for their lack of weapons and armor, these vehicles do not show up on Bomber HUDs. This allows them to slip around the battlefield with an element of stealth and makes them excellent choices for snipers or special ops players.
ZPU
This stationary anti-air gun sports 4 rapid fire cannons. The bullets fired have tracers which aid in adjusting fire to hit airborne targets.
TIP: Tracers work both ways, so be careful about giving away your position to aircraft by firing when it’s not necessary.
MLRS/BM-21/SCUD/M-109
These units form the artillery force of the game. They are the only units capable of utilizing the artillery spotting system.
TIP: The artillery units do not show up on bomber HUDs. However, one should note that it is possible for the enemy to track down an artillery unit by following the shells or rockets back to their source.
Aircraft
A-10/Su-25
These planes fullfill the role of close air support. Each of these aircraft sport a powerful 30mm cannon capable of shredding armor and any other ground based vehicle. Unlike the 20mm fighter cannons, these cannons have bullet drop and overheat, making them difficult to use against aircraft and choppers.
Aside from their cannons, these aircraft also utilize slick bombs to devestate ground targets. Unlike BF2, these bombs may only be dropped one at a time.
In addition to these slick bombs, the A-10 also has the option of dropping stabilized winged bombs. Unlike the slick bombs, these bombs drop more accurately but their descent to the ground is slower.
-Tip: For more precise bombing, pay attention to how many bombs you have left. This will let you know which wing will release the bomb and allow you to bomb much closer to your intended target.
F-18/F-15/Mig-29/Mirage
These planes fullfill the role of air superiority and specialize in downing enemy aircraft. Fighters in Desert Conflict do not have lock on missles or bombs like the fighters featured in BF2.
Despite the fact your HUD will display a lock, these missles do not guide at all and simply fly in a straight line off their chassis on the wing. A player doesn’t need to directly hit an enemy aircraft to achieve a hit.
When your HUD locks onto an enemy aircraft the target will receive an alarm.
-Tip: By pressing your weapon select button, you can choose to turn your missles off. In this mode you may only fire your guns and you cannot see the heat signatures of aircraft. However, in this mode you do not attempt to lock on and alert enemy fighters. This makes this firing mode excellent for sneaking up on others. Because the missles are dumbfire, you needn't wait for the lock tone to fire. Simply line up your target and pull the trigger the moment you switch to the missle firing mode.
AH-64/Mi-24
These choppers fullfill the role of close air support and each pose a serious threat to armor convoys and troop movement. Aside from their hydra rocket pods, each also possess heavy hitting hellfire missles which can easily destroy well armored targets.
In Desert Conflict the pilot has control of both the hydra pods and the hellfire missles while the gunner controls the gun.
The gunner position in the AH-64 has a black and white camera view which makes picking out targets a bit more difficult. However, it is also capable of using a zoom feature by pressing the alt-fire button mapped to your helicopter controls. The guns themselves are also a bit different between the aircraft. The AH-64 gun fires slower, but has a larger splash area than the Mi-24's.
The rocket and missle loadouts for each aircraft are also different. The Mi-24 has more hydra rockets, but fewer hellfire missles. However, the Mi-24's hellfire missles are more powerful than the AH-64's.
Comparing mobility, the AH-64 can make tighter turns while the Mi-24 has a higher top speed.
-Tip: When a hellfire is fired, it attempts to guide itself very slightly to wherever the pilot’s crosshairs are located. The missle is incapable of adjusting itself much, so in essence the missle will hit wherever the crosshairs are when the pilot fires. For best results, the pilot should briefly hold his crosshairs on his target while the missle is enroute.
Little Bird/MD-500
The Little Bird is a small yet agile helo which comes in three different varieties. The transport version, which can hold up to 5 passengers along with the pilot and has no weapons. And 2 attack versions which can hold a single passenger along with the pilot. These versions utilizes dual miniguns, with one version having mounted hydra pods in addition to the miniguns.
The MD-500, the Opposition equivalent to the Little Bird, only comes in a single variety which uses a pair of powerful machine guns. These guns do not have the firing rate of the Little Bird miniguns, but are much more powerful per shot.
As with other vehicles, passengers are free to fire their weapons from the aircraft.
-Tip: Always be sure to use your agility and speed to your advantage. These tiny helos have very little armor.
UH60L Blackhawk
This modified Blackhawk is mounted with dual forward firing miniguns and 8 hellfire rockets. It is capable of carrying up to 5 passengers along with the pilot.
-Tip: This chopper is capable of unleashing an amazing amount of firepower to anything its nose is pointed at. However, the hellfires for the UH60L do not have the guiding function that the Apache and Hind use and the pilot must manually adjust for the chopper’s inertia on the missles.
AC-130
The AC-130 Spectre is a large aircraft capable of unleashing immense devestation onto the enemy. The left side of the aircraft is lined with 4 weapons: Two 20mm Vulcan Gatling Gungs, one 40mm Cannon, and one 105mm Howitzer. It is capable of holding 6 troops in total: 1 pilot, 1 passenger, and 4 gunners. These gunner positions are capable of using a zoom feature by pressing their alt-fire key. If the pilot presses his alt-fire key he can shift his view left to better see what the gunners are capable of firing on.
Whichever team has a troop in this vehicle will be able to utilize it has a mobile spawn point. This spawn point is only active when the vehicle is manned and will not be accessable if there are no empty seats available.
-Tip: Despite the fact that the AC-130 has a lot armor, it still needs to have fighter support if it is to stay in the air for an extended period of time.
Mi-17
The Mi-17 is a large chopper specializing in troop transport. To make up for its lack of firepower it sports a bit more armor than the Coalition Blackhawk.
Whichever team has a troop in this vehicle will be able to utilize it has a mobile spawn point. This spawn point is only active when the vehicle is manned and will not be accessible if there are no empty seats available.
-Tip: This vehicle is great for hovering high above an outpost and providing your team a place to spawn and paradrop onto the enemy.
CH-53
The CH-53 is a large chopper specializing in troop transport. 3 of the 5 passenger positions sport weapons, with dual .50 cal machine guns facing the left and right sides and a minigun facing the rear of the aircraft.
Whichever team has a troop in this vehicle will be able to utilize it has a mobile spawn point. This spawn point is only active when the vehicle is manned and will not be accessible if there are no empty seats available.
If needed, this chopper is also buoyant and capable of making aquatic landings.
-Tip: This vehicle is great for hovering high above an outpost and providing your team a place to spawn and paradrop onto the enemy.
