The following information describes how to use the Desert Conflict Artillery System. In order to utilize the full feature set of the Artillery System, 2 players are recommended; 1 player spots a target with a spotting tool, and then 1 player fires at the spotted target with an artillery vehicle.

"Spotting" a target

These steps will help a player "spot" a target so that his teammate can use an artillery vehicle to launch an artillery barrage. See the next section for vehicle usage.

  1. When joining a game, you must select either the Sniper kit, Special Ops kit or Assault kit. Only these kits contain the (Ground Laser Target Designator (GLTD) II). In each of these kits the GTLD is the small green binocular that appears at the bottom of the weapon selection options. For example, the Sniper kit contains the knife, handgun, sniper rifle, grenade and GLTD. Certain positions in some vehicles may also utilize this function (Example: Passenger seat of the BRDM).
  2. Face the area for which you intend to create the spot for an artillery barrage. Then activate your communication rose (the default key is "Q") and you should notice the "Spotted" function text has been replaced with the "Need Artillery" text.
  3. Select the "Need Artillery" icon by highlighting it and then left clicking the mouse.

  4. After selecting the "Need Artillery" option, an icon will appear at the top of your screen next to your mini-map indicating that your spot was successful.

  5. After 15 seconds, an orange server message will appear stating the amount of time your spot will remain active. Messages will be displayed every 15 seconds displaying the time remaining until the Artillery spot has timed out.

-Tip: When you spot a location, this places a spotting camera 20 meters above your current location and angled 20 degrees downward towards the ground. On flat ground this places the focus of the camera about 37 meters in front of you. It is important to take this into account because this view is what your team mates within artillery vehicles will see when they use your spot. This camera will always face where you are facing. How far up or down you’re looking doesn’t affect the angle of the camera.

Utilizing the "Spotting" target system with an artillery vehicle

  1. Get into an artillery vehicle and go into the firing seat position. Artillery vehicles are the M-109, MLRS, BM-21, and SCUD.
  2. Right Click your mouse to pull up any active spotting cameras. If no spots are currently active, you can request one from your team mates by bringing up your communication rose and selecting “Arty Ready”. Note this option is only available in the firing position in an artillery vehicle.

  3. You can cycle through multiple spotting cameras by pulling up your communication rose and selecting “Next Arty Cam”. Note this option is only available in the firing position in an artillery vehicle.

Special Note

The artillery changes to the commmunication rose will only appear if you are in the first person camera. If you change the vehicle camera position (Default 'c'), the communication rose will appear in its default format. This can prove useful, as it gives the player a way to spot enemies without moving from their firing position.
